Behind Every Great Team is a Great Support System

While the Alabama Bureau of Pardons and Paroles’ officers work diligently on the front line, our behind-the-scenes team also contributes to a safer Alabama. One may wonder how we’ve built such a strong team, and it begins with the hiring process. Personnel Assistant III Kim McDaniel is responsible for assisting with the recruitment and selection process. “I take pride in ensuring we are hiring the cream of the crop,” Kim said. “It is important we hire individuals who are qualified while also offering them a fair opportunity.”

Kim, who has worked with the Bureau since 2019, enjoys collaborating closely with the training division to oversee and accommodate the administrative needs of new and existing employees. She often feels delighted to play a part in the accomplishment of applicants becoming officers. “I am always super excited and proud to witness each trainee successfully complete the academy and be promoted to officer.” After learning their stories and backgrounds, she gains a glimpse of insight on the importance of their badge to them.

With prior experience working at the Alabama Department of Corrections as a Personnel Assistant II and Alabama Department of Revenue as an Administrative Support Assistant III, Kim is perfect for her position. Along with her vital role in the onboarding and interview procedures, her day-to-day routine consists of managing personnel records and updating employee files. “I truly enjoy providing internal resources to our employees,” said Kim. “Me, my supervisor [Personnel Director] Tasika Fielder, and our entire personnel team support each other in order to support the agency’s employee needs. We’re the backbone of a great team.”

Much like any demanding career field, it can be challenging serving as the main point of contact for employee needs. She accredits her faith as the attribute that gives her the strength to excel in her position and face any challenge with grace. The Bureau’s personnel department makes a great effort to create a positive workforce and promote overall productivity while supporting employees, and Kim is an essential piece of that puzzle.
