Opelika, Ala. – In an atmosphere filled with new beginnings, the Opelika Day Reporting Center Lite honored their latest class of nine graduates during a commencement ceremony held at their location on Center Hills Drive. DRC Lites provide counseling, educational training, job skills, and supervision for probationers and parolees. This event marked the result of months of dedication and hard work by participants striving to turn their lives in a positive direction.
Administrator Robert Pritchett opened the ceremony by acknowledging the graduates’ achievements and expressing gratitude to the community partners, DRC Lite staff, and family members who played a vital role in their success.
The program’s GED instructor, Tiffany Cappenger, commended the graduates for their determination to succeed academically and personally. She has worked hands-on with each graduate and witnessed firsthand the growth and progress they underwent to reach this moment. “We are proud of you,” she said. “We’ve always believed in each of you and now we want you to continue to believe in yourselves because this is proof that you can do it.”
One of the most touching moments of the ceremony came from Brian Farrar Jr., a DRC Lite graduate who delivered his own personal testimony. “Honestly, it was time for a change in my life,” he said. “I’ve been headed down the wrong road for a long time until I finally realized I needed to reroute.” Farrar showed immense appreciation to everyone who contributed to his newfound success. He ended his testimonial giving praise to the Lord and quoting a scripture that carried him through – Philippians 3:13-14.
Speaker Johnnie Matthews inspired attendees with a keynote address emphasizing resilience and the importance of continuing on a path of growth and self-improvement. She urged graduates to see this achievement not as the conclusion of their journey, but as a pivotal new chapter. “Your story is yours to write,” she said. “You’ve proven that change is possible, and tomorrow holds endless possibilities.”
Closing remarks were provided by newly promoted DRC Lite District Manager John Humber. “Today marks a turning point for each of you. This is proof that change is possible when you commit to growth,” he said. “Keep going, graduates. Do not hesitate to reach out to any of us.”
The Opelika DRC Lite staff also awarded special recognition awards to former Rep. Oliver Robinson and Keynote Speaker Johnnie Matthews for inspiring the graduates throughout their journey. With a focus on employment assistance, substance abuse treatment, mental health, and cognitive restructuring needs, DRC Lite staff is committed to reducing recidivism rates and improving public safety through behavior change.
